Have I ever mentioned that I got engaged in Paris? Probably. It’s one of those stories that feels very in keeping with the world’s idea of romantic love because it also happened to take place on a weekend on which Valentine’s Day fell.

I’ve been editing magazines for over a decade, and it’s easy to fall in with what occupies the world around us, reiterating the same seasonal themes with slight variations. In February, Valentine’s Day occupies that seasonal space on shop shelves between Christmas decorations and Easter eggs. And, while many Christians will agree that the heart-shaped chocolates and Valentine-themed restaurant menus have no place in church, Valentine’s Day always reminds me of the importance the Church puts on marital relationships.

In this issue, I asked our two most opinionated writers, Veronica Zundel and Kate Orson, what they think about the pedestal on which we place marriage. You can read their thoughts on pages 54-55. In our long read this month, Dr Belle Tindall considers this with specific focus on whether women without husbands and children are being isolated in their congregations.

One of my favourite conversations for this issue was the one I had with a church leader in her early 20s, Sasha Gerry. When I was 24 and newly engaged the only thing on my mind was wedding planning, so I was intrigued by the dedication and passion of this young woman. Her godly wisdom and heart for the Church has placed her leading men and women more than twice her age.

Sasha has encouraged me greatly and I hope you feel the same.

Love and blessings,
