Prayer and reflection

Baron Pierre de Coubertin, visionary and founder of the modern Olympics, would surely be thrilled that Paris, his birthplace, is hosting the 2024 Olympics. The emblem of five coloured rings represents the world’s five inhabited continents and symbolises global unity. The Olympic motto reads in Latin “Citius, Altius, Fortius – Communiter” and translates as “Faster, Higher, Stronger – Together” – a timeless sentiment that is more relevant now than ever.

Sporting events bring people together. My earliest memory of the Olympics was in 1984, watching Mary Decker run towards Olympic glory and fall in the process. At the time, this really upset me, as it seemed as though she’d been pushed by Zola Budd. The fact that she was unable to finish made it all the more poignant.

The scripture from 1 Corinthians 9:24: “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize,” reminds us of the importance of perseverance and resilience. We grow exponentially when our faith in Jesus Christ directs our path. Life’s journey is like a race filled with challenges, but by staying true to our spiritual and physical goals, we align ourselves with our true purpose. The beauty of sports embodies the joy and love of life itself.

One of the greatest sportsmen of all time, Michael Jordan, said: “I’ve missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I’ve been trusted to take the game-winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” If we learn from our mistakes, we are strengthened when we fall as failure can be the greatest teacher.

When we work together peacefully and inclusively, we can strengthen our society, fulfil our dreams and inspire our children. The Olympics embody a sense of togetherness, resilience, hope and strength. Here’s to the spirit of sports and everyone involved! May we be faster, higher, stronger and together for this Olympics and many more to come – let the games begin!

Loving Father, grant us peace and connection

Throughout the world.

Let us not be tempted to draw lines of division,

Instead, open our

hearts to compassion

and forgiveness,

Lead us towards health

and good choices.

May you nourish our hearts and all those we love,

So that we may strive towards togetherness, decency, fairness

And, above all, peace.

Lord, in your mercy,

Bring strength to

all sports people,

Regardless of age

or mobility.

May everyone partake

and grow in confidence.

Help us to live by

your example,

Love and serve you Lord, who bestows on us

strength and serenity.

We humbly ask for

your protection

for all athletes.

Please keep them safe

from harm and injury.

Lord, in your mercy,

grant us peace

throughout the world.

May the inspiring light

of the Olympics

bring togetherness everlasting.

Amen.
