Prayer and reflection

The fresh start found in surrendering Cold winter nights starkly contrast with the warmth of new beginnings. When we surrender our worries to God, we grow in strength and self-doubt loses its hold on a heart focused on him. Embracing a daily practice of surrender can infuse our lives with hope and love, enriching every aspect of our existence.

Modern life is hectic. Messages and emails flood in, making it easy to feel exhausted and reactive. God is in the pause. Today, I took a conscious pause and went fishing with my son. At one point, a splash created a ripple effect in the river. Was it a pike? Quick as a flash, the fish was out of sight, the shimmering sunshine reflecting the leafless trees glimmering and dazzling on the water. We watched the ripples stretch outwards. It reminded me of the profound impact of faith and love, which have a ripple effect on everything in our lives.

Jesus gently reminds us that when we embrace a relationship with him, we can experience profound transformation, leaving behind the burdens of our old lives. This journey allows us to grow into new individuals filled with hope and renewal. Are you embracing a fresh start this January? I truly hope so.

Paul’s letter to the Corinthians 5:17, he reminded them, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation.” The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.

This new year, I’m not giving anything up, but surrendering and letting go, bidding farewell to self-doubt and naysayers – the gossips, competitive foes and those who disrupt my peace. I am channelling my energy and thoughts towards God with all my heart. The first day of January arrives only once a year, but each morning offers a gift: a fresh start, and a forgiving breath of fresh air. Growing older is a true blessing; as I explore the deeper aspects of personal growth, I am fortified by the eternal promise that God gives us.

God understands the weight of past shame and sin, and the beautiful truth is that he forgives us when we repent. We are gently encouraged to practise this same grace with others: “Love your neighbour as yourself” (Mark 12:31). Holding onto shame and hurt can lead to feelings of fear, but remember that you are never alone. We may share our worries with God, trusting in his unwavering love and forgiveness.

I am reminded of Emily Dickinson’s life-affirming words, “Forever is composed of nows” especially at this time of year. I hope 2025 brings you many new opportunities and ‘nows’ and is abundant with hopes and dreams. Jeremiah 29:11 reminds us that God has a plan for our lives, and he gives us “hope and a future”. Happy New Year.
